Fitted wardrobes, kitchens, doors, beds, dining, consoles, wood-panelled walls and beamed ceilings, statement pieces — drawn on your floor plan, sized to your walls, and made in one factory in solid wood, premium veneers, Italian marble, stainless steel and hand-crafted detailing. Interior design is baked into every decision; it is how the pieces end up belonging to the room.

The four doors

Door one

The contractor

He'll build anything you show him a picture of, at a price that sounds sensible. Weeks later the finish is slightly off, the proportions slightly wrong, the wood not quite what was agreed — and he's already at the next site.

Door two

The showroom

Showrooms sell pieces, not rooms. Bought from three different floors, the grains don't match, the polish tones don't match, the pieces never learn to speak to each other. And since furniture carries roughly 70% of the cost of doing up a home, by the time you notice — it's far too expensive to be wrong.

The imported brand

You pay for the name; you get the name. And within months you'll see the same sofa in another home on Golf Course Road. The label was never going to make it yours.

Before anything else

Every estimate you were given before a design existed was fiction.

You've lived this. Someone quoted a number to win the project. The number was a guess dressed as a commitment — and every month after, it grew. Not because you asked for more. Because it was never real.

A price can only be honest after the design exists. Before the drawings, before the materials, before anyone has measured your walls — there is nothing to price. A number at that stage is pricing your willingness to say yes.

Which is why everything here runs in the opposite order: conversation first, design next, and then a number that holds — because it was priced from drawings, not from hope.

The design — reverse-engineered

The furniture is designed and frozen on the layout first. Then everything else answers to it — lighting lands where the bed and the sofa actually are, ceilings and walls are treated around the pieces, fabrics arrive last to tie the palette. The room is designed backwards from how it will be lived in. Almost nobody works in this order. It is the whole reason the rooms feel inevitable.

When you move clutter into an organized system and ignite all the [aesthetic] senses into it, everything calms down. Spaces begin to talk. Communication starts flowing. I have seen the impact such spaces have on children growing up in homes I built — incorporating their sketches collaged on walls, reaching everything themselves, them becoming a part of the design process. I'm convinced those kids grow into more confident adults, and that their home had a hand in it. It puts me on a high.

Commissioned furniture is the heart of it all. I start thinking in design [or my designs start] with a barrage of questions that I am known for— what you reach for every morning, what frustrates you daily, what deserves the prime real estate of your home and what should quietly disappear. [Add a Metaphor or an acronym]. Actual designing comes much later.The discipline behind it goes back to my years as head designer with Christopher Pook of Pook Design Group, on the Taj Group's southern chain of hotels. That's where hand-drawn detail drawings became my language — and they still are. I love playing with lines on paper and then watching them build.

Picking up the right materials from the market is an art too that I truly enjoy. Mixing up fabrics in a space. Senior Advocate Aryama Sundaram — among the country's top 10 lawyers — wanted the exact Kadappa stone he remembered from his childhood home in Chennai for his Jor Bagh residence. The expression on his face once it was all laid, was a delight to watch. Your money is spent better with a trained eye beside it.

I take one or two homes at a time by choice — because this kind of studying, detailing and drawing simply cannot be done for ten families a month. Been having fun with this kind of stuff for over two decades.

What exactly is commissioned furniture?

Furniture — and the design around it — conceived for your home and built into it. Fitted wardrobes, kitchens, doors, beds, dining, consoles, wood-panelled walls and beamed ceilings, statement pieces — drawn on your floor plan, sized to your walls, and made in one factory in solid wood, premium veneers, Italian marble, stainless steel and hand-crafted detailing. Interior design is baked into every decision; it is how the pieces end up belonging to the room.

Where do you work?

Gurgaon — deliberately. One designer, one factory, one or two homes at a time works because the time saved on distance goes into the drawings and the site. Select Delhi projects are considered where the fit is exceptional.

Is there a minimum project size?

The practice is built around whole homes and substantial commissions — the drawing process, factory oversight and supervised installation need a certain scale to be done properly. The right starting point for any project, of any size, is the working session: bring the home, and you'll get a straight answer on fit either way.

Can I see a design and an estimate before committing?

A design made before understanding your family would be a guess, and an estimate made before a design exists would be fiction — you've probably paid for that fiction before. Design here begins with the Design Brief Session, a serious, structured sitting that only happens once a project is committed. What comes before it is the working session — an hour on your home, your questions and your numbers, so both sides can decide with clear eyes.

Why is your fee fixed — not a percentage of the project?

Most designers charge per square foot or as a percentage of what you spend — meaning the more your materials cost, the more they earn, for the same design work. That has never made sense here. The design fee is fixed against the scope and ambition of your project, calculated on time and complexity — and it stays fixed even if you upgrade your materials mid-way. Your budget decisions should be yours, not your designer's incentive.

I'm moving back to India. Can this run remotely?

Yes — some of the most precise projects have been briefed over video by families returning to India. Drawings approved remotely, factory documentation at every stage, and a supervised installation waiting before you land.

I already have an architect, or drawings of my own. Can we still work together?

Yes. Bring the drawings — yours, your architect's, or something you've saved from anywhere. The one condition: the furniture brief comes from a direct conversation between designer and family. That part is never relayed through a third party, because that is where the home actually lives.
